It comes locked to Metro by T-Mobile but automatically unlocked after 180 days even if you only have one month of service according to many readers. Be sure to keep the SIM card and insert it while on Wifi when it comes close to the 180 days so that it can automatically unlock. Once unlocked you can use it on any compatible wireless carrier. For the meantime, you can still use it on Wifi if you don’t want to continue with Metros service.

The only cost you will have to pay is the sales tax and shipping in some cases. This is a great deal if you have a device you no longer use and don’t mind sticking around on T-Mobile for a while. When they offered this deal last year, I bought a flip phone on Amazon for under $10 to trade in and had no issues.
